YONSEI X CUHK Design & City in Culture Field Trip

2024.06.14 - 19 | Seoul, Korea

This summer, a remarkable cultural exchange took place between students from the Yonsei University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). From June 14th to 19th, ten CUHK students visited Korea to immerse themselves in its rich culture and vibrant modern scene. Their journey was filled with meaningful activities, offering them a deep dive into Korean traditions and contemporary life.

Korea's Traditional Culture: Soy Sauce Tteokbokki Cooking Class, Hanbok Experience at Gyeongbokgung Palace

Upon their arrival in Seoul, the CUHK students embarked on an exploration of the city’s diverse cultural landscape. They began their adventure by visiting traditional markets where they had the opportunity to taste Korean delicacies like Bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes) and Makgeolli (fermented rice wine). Not stopping there, they also participated in a Korean cooking class, where they learned to prepare Korean traditional dishes themselves.

The cultural immersion continued with a visit to Gyeongbokgung Palace, where the students dressed in hanbok, traditional Korean attire. Walking through the palace grounds, they discovered the intricate history behind each building and gained insights into Korea’s past. The experience offered them a glimpse into Korea’s historical architecture, traditional clothing, and culinary practices.

Korea's New Culture: Visiting DDP(Dongdaemun Design Plaza), Hongdae, Sungsu-dong

But the journey didn’t end with the past. The students also explored modern South Korea, visiting iconic spots like Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Hongdae, and Seongsu-dong. These areas are renowned for their cutting-edge architecture and the vibrant 'Gen-Z' culture that thrives in contemporary Seoul. By experiencing both the historical and modern facets of Korea, the students were able to appreciate the country’s evolution and envision its future.

YONSEI X CUHK

Despite the sweltering summer heat, the CUHK students participated enthusiastically in every program. Their engagement and curiosity throughout the trip highlighted their dedication to this cross-cultural experience. The week-long visit not only provided them with a deeper understanding of Korean culture but also forged lasting connections between the two universities.
